E-Bike Range & Battery Capacity Explained
Understand e-bike range, battery volts, amp-hours and watt-hours. Learn what the Spacewalk EB012's 48V / 15Ah battery and stated mileage tell you before a ride.
What do volts, amp-hours and watt-hours mean?
Voltage (V) describes the battery's electrical voltage. Amp-hours (Ah) describe its charge capacity. Multiplying nominal voltage by amp-hours gives an approximate nominal energy capacity in watt-hours (Wh).
48 V x 15 Ah = approximately 720 Wh. That calculation describes the listed Spacewalk EB012 battery's nominal energy capacity. It does not establish usable energy under every condition or guarantee a particular riding distance.
Why a range figure is not a fixed distance
An e-bike uses energy differently across rides. Rider and cargo load, hills, wind, temperature, speed, stops and assistance settings can all change how far a charge lasts. Two riders on the same model can see different results on different routes.
The Spacewalk EB012 supplier lists approximately 45–60 miles. Treat that as a manufacturer-stated range, not a promise that every trip will reach the upper number. The specification does not establish a separate long-range battery version in the current listing.
Plan your own route
- Calculate the entire trip, including the return ride and likely detours.
- Consider the hills, riding conditions and load you expect.
- Allow a margin instead of planning to use the full stated range.
- Learn how your bike performs on shorter, familiar rides before planning a longer outing.
- Check the battery level before departure and follow the supplied operating instructions.
What a removable battery changes
A removable battery allows the battery and bike to be stored separately for charging when the manufacturer permits it. It can be useful when your storage area is away from a suitable charging location. It does not by itself make charging faster or extend riding range.
Use the manufacturer-approved charging equipment and follow the supplied instructions for charging and storage. If you are considering a spare battery, confirm the exact model and compatibility before buying; matching voltage alone is not enough.
Peak motor watts and battery watt-hours are different
The motor's 1,500W peak figure is an output specification. The battery's approximate 720Wh figure is an energy-capacity calculation. They describe different things and should not be compared as if one were a direct measure of mileage. Peak motor output is also different from a continuous motor rating.
